Ch. 3 - The Voyage

Buckinghamshire at Holdfast Bay in 1839. Welcome,
Andrew Russell's vessel, may be to the left.

It was a long and hazardous voyage to South Australia and vessels and passengers were at the mercy of the weather. Andrew Russell visited the colony in 1839. His lively and insightful journal forms the basis for this chapter. During the journey, passengers died, babies were born. Andrew himself was almost washed overboard.  The food was mostly terrible and maritime regulations were largely ignored. When the weather was bad, the cook got drunk and took to his bed. The journal brings the experience alive. Despite everything, Andrew appears to have had a good time.
