Ch. 4 - First Arrival

The Adamson family's tent in September 1839

What was daily life like for the early settlers? This chapter looks at Adelaide in the first four years after Proclamation. Andrew Russell had a good wander round the fledgling community during his two week visit. He described the difficulties of just getting off the boat when there were no wharves. He was impressed with some of the building that had already been done. Some migrants were dismayed that the reality of life in the colony did not match the puffery. The lack of potable water caused problems for all and dysentery for many. The failure of the South Australian Company to complete surveys on time meant many settlers were simply waiting around to get their land so that they could get on with their lives.
